Simple Kind To Skin Smoothing Facial Scrub Review

Skincare isn't really my forté if I'm honest but one of my millions of New Years Resolutions was to find out more about the things I feature on my blog and really get to the nitty gritty of the product.

Today I'm putting the Simple Kind To Skin Smoothing Facial Scrub under the torchlight and letting you know not only if it works, but also if the ingredients are really all that 'Simple'... See what I did there? You better be laughing, I put a lot of thought into that!

What Does It Do?
This exfoliator is designed to keep your skin 'brighter and more even textured' and it says on the bottle that it's even ideal for people with sensitive skin. Simple always claim to have simple ingredients with no perfume or colour.

How Does It Work?
This has a creamy texture which is filled with little rice granules which act as the exfoliant. It also has pro vitamin B (which softens and smoothes) and Vitamin E (a good skin all rounder - it generally moisturizes)

What's In It?
Aqua, Paraffinum Liquidum, Coco-Glucoside, Oryza Sativa Germ Powder, Polyethylene, Olus Oil, Acrylates Copolymer, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Panthenol, Methylparaben, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Disodium EDTA, Tocopheryl Acetate, Dipropylene Glycol, Pantolactone, Anthemis Nobilis Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Oil, Citric Acid.

Anything harmful in there?
Yeah, a few things! Turns out Simple's ingredients aren't so simple! However, all of these ingredients are accepted in the industry. While I've done my best to suss out these ingredients online, the quantities of the ingredients were not mentioned therefore I can't say how harmful they would be in certain quantities. As always, all opinions are my own and any facts have been found online through extensive research.

Paraffinum Liquidum
This is 100% mineral oil which might sound all good and proper but this has large molecules which are unable to sink into the skin which might sound good again, but actually, it is an oily film which acts like a "skin cling film". It attracts bacteria due to the fact that your skin is unable to breathe properly. Definitely worth avoiding if you suffer from Eczema or Psoriasis.

Polyethylene
This absolutely must not be used on broken skin. Some people with burns who have been treated with this ingredient have been reported to have had Kidney Toxicity. It's unlikely to be harmful to you on good skin, and it is unlikely to harm you on broken skin, but if you research the ingredient, most skincare whizz kids advise against using products containing this ingredient (unfortunately, thousands of products contain it).

MethylParaben
Really simple? parabens in a supposedly "kind to skin" product? Parabens, including Methylparaben are linked to Cancer, with hundreds of websites online warning people against using products containing any parabens.

Sodium Hydroxide
Google this, go on, I dare you! Again, I'm unsure of how much is too much with this product, but it can cause redness and burning sensations and that's just at the low end. I was actually quite frightened after I read about this, go take a look and see for yourself!

Tocopheryl Acetate
This is the Vitamin E component I was talking about earlier, which is great but it has been known to trigger issues like itching, burning and hives so perhaps not such a good idea for people who are prone to hives.

Overall Thoughts?
I've been using Simple for years and while the products seem very 'green' and skin friendly on the tub, being made aware of some of the harmful ingredients have really made me think twice about using this product. Sometimes girls, it's just not worth it!

Have you used this? Would scary ingredients like the ones I mentioned above frighten you as much as they did for me? Would you stop using Simple because of it?

Hope some of this info helps!

All My Love

Holly xx

  1. It really is a brand that is advertised at being simple and natural yet it's quite the opposite. I'm not green or anything like that wit hmy products, but I don't like false advertisements. I also tried one of their cleansers and it didn't agree with my skin at all x
